Ensuring Proper Calibration
ADAS systems have the potential to help drivers stay alert, drive safely, and even park with greater ease. For example, your vehicle might feature a lane departure warning alerting you if you’re entering unintended road space. Also, the system can help you with emergency braking if your attention wanes and you’re in danger of crashing into something ahead of you. Perhaps most importantly, the features can cut reaction time, helping you avoid a child running into the road after a ball. However, all of these safety features are only as good as the calibrations performed on them. The system must be able to accurately “see” and assess the situation in real-time. If you’ve been involved in a fender bender or had windshield replacement, you definitely need ADAS calibration, even if your vehicle’s damage is not extreme. Furthermore, it’s important to perform both static and in-motion ADAS calibrations. Static calibrations are performed inside the shop using fixed targets. In contrast, other work is done outside as the car is maneuvered. The point of both is to return your system to the strict tolerances the manufacturer sets.
